New Zealand's Opportunity party has released its climate policy ahead of the 2026 election, proposing a methane cap-and-trade scheme to cut agricultural emissions and a NZ$5 billion fund for climate adaptation. The party also wants tax write-offs for home and business energy upgrades, including rooftop solar and batteries, and changes to the emissions trading scheme to prioritize direct emissions cuts over forestry offsets. The methane trading scheme is still exploratory, with design details like credit banking and trading across to carbon credits left open. The resilience fund would support transport, energy, and water networks against extreme weather, including NZ$500 million for nature-based solutions like wetlands. These proposals come after the coalition government weakened methane targets and removed cross-party consensus on climate policy.
