The Smith Center for Education and Research in Maine utilizes mass timber and superinsulation to significantly lower its environmental footprint. The design aims to offset its entire embodied carbon debt within its usable lifespan through carbon sequestration and high-efficiency building envelopes. Key features include a 44 kW solar array, triple-glazed curtain walls for passive solar gain, and a structure that uses 60 percent less energy than comparable buildings. The project demonstrates how traditional New England barn architecture can be combined with modern low-carbon materials.
