ONYX Hospitality Group and SP Group signed an MOU to deploy energy efficient cooling and renewable energy systems at hotels in Thailand. The first project is already running at Amari Don Muang Airport Bangkok, where a 1,195 RT chiller plant was replaced with high efficiency equipment and automated controls. Expected results are more than 40 percent lower cooling energy use, 900,000 kWh saved per year, and 449 tonnes of CO2 avoided annually. Because the deal uses a Cooling-as-a-Service model, the hotel avoids the upfront capital cost and pays for cooling performance over a 15 year contract. That structure matters for hotel owners who want efficiency gains without taking on equipment risk. The partners say they will look for similar opportunities across other ONYX properties in Thailand, including renewable energy installations. For anyone tracking carbon reduction projects in the built environment, this is a concrete example of how efficiency contracts can deliver measurable emissions cuts outside the carbon credit system.
