One NZ AI Trust Report 2026: Kiwis worry about AI's carbon footprint and energy use
business.scoop.co.nzA new report from One New Zealand shows 45% of New Zealanders are concerned about the environmental impact of AI used by businesses, with 66% worried about electricity consumption and 44% about carbon emissions. The survey of 1,001 people found younger adults aged 18-24 are most concerned, at 63%. The report suggests businesses need to show tangible action on AI sustainability, not just promises. Top actions people want include using renewable energy, cutting energy use, and being transparent about environmental impacts. One NZ itself cut AI-related carbon emissions by 83% by moving workloads to Sweden. The findings point to a growing link between trust in AI and visible sustainability efforts. As AI infrastructure grows, companies may face more pressure to disclose energy sources and efficiency measures alongside their AI deployments.
