Swiss sportswear brand On has launched the Cloud X 5, the first shoe with a midsole made from captured carbon emissions, scaled to over a million pairs. The CleanCloud technology uses industrial CO2 combined with green hydrogen to create e-naphtha, then e-EVA pellets, cutting the midsole's modeled carbon impact by at least 80% versus conventional EVA. On achieved commercial scale four years ahead of schedule by integrating with existing chemical reactors from partners Infinium and Borouge International. The performance of the foam is identical to standard EVA since the molecular structure is the same. The midsole accounts for more than half the shoe's weight, making it a priority for material innovation. On plans to extend CleanCloud to other footwear styles. The LCA was performed by CarbonMinds and critically reviewed by TUV under ISO standards, though it uses a credit approach based on modeled scenarios.
