OMV has received a €450 million loan from the European Investment Bank to build a 140MW green hydrogen plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria. The facility, costing €600 million in total, will produce up to 23,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year starting in 2027. The hydrogen will replace fossil-based hydrogen at OMV's Schwechat refinery via a new 22km pipeline, cutting direct CO₂ emissions by 150,000 tonnes annually, about 10% of the refinery's current emissions. The project is the EIB's largest energy investment in Austria and supports the European Green Deal and REPowerEU goals. It also strengthens the European electrolyser supply chain. OMV plans to use the hydrogen to produce sustainable aviation fuels and other low-carbon products as part of its net-zero by 2050 strategy.
