OMIFCO, the Oman India Fertiliser Company, is working on a plan to lower the carbon footprint of its ammonia production. The company has completed several studies looking at carbon capture (CCUS), green hydrogen, and renewable energy integration. These efforts are part of a phased strategy to stay competitive as global demand for low-carbon ammonia grows. The company's roadmap, developed with Norway-based AKSO, covers options like solar and wind power for plant utilities, green hydrogen feedstock, and CCUS for flue gas emissions. A separate pre-feasibility study by Italy-based Casale identified a suitable carbon capture technology for OMIFCO's ammonia plants. The company is also part of the Sur Hydrogen and Energy Transition Cluster, which explores shared decarbonisation infrastructure with other regional industries. OMIFCO is still evaluating the economic feasibility and commercial value of these technologies before scaling up. Key dependencies include the availability of CO2 transport and storage infrastructure, plus continued decarbonisation of Oman's national grid. The company aims to reduce carbon intensity while maintaining reliable operations and meeting customer expectations in the global fertiliser market.
