OQ Gas Networks and startup AB Energy are developing a sand-based thermal energy storage system in Oman. This technology uses renewable electricity to heat sand, storing energy as high-temperature heat for industrial steam and processing instead of using lithium-ion batteries. The project marks a shift toward low-carbon industrial heating in the region. By utilizing abundant local sand, the system aims to provide a cost-effective way to store renewable energy for heavy industry and residential power applications.
