Oman's Al Baleed Petrochemical invests in CO2-to-chemicals venture for Salalah Petrochemical Park
omanobserver.omOman's Al Baleed Petrochemical has joined Carbeau, a spin-out from Dutch firm Avantium, as a strategic partner to commercialize a technology that converts captured CO2 into high-value chemicals using renewable electricity. The venture targets glycolic acid and PLGA, a biodegradable polymer, as initial products. Al Baleed plans to deploy the first commercial-scale plant outside Europe at its Salalah Petrochemical Park, leveraging Oman's solar resources and industrial infrastructure to create a sustainable chemical value chain. The Salalah Petrochemical Park is designed as an integrated downstream hub combining conventional petrochemical production with low-carbon technologies. The first phase includes a propane dehydrogenation plant and facilities for maleic anhydride, acetic acid, and other chemicals. By integrating CO2 utilization with existing petrochemical operations, the project aims to reduce emissions, expand exports, and support Oman's Vision 2040 industrial diversification goals. The venture highlights growing interest in electrochemical CO2 conversion as a commercially viable decarbonization pathway for the chemical sector.
