Oman rises to 49th in global Environmental Performance Index, targets top 20 by 2040 under Vision 2040
timesofoman.comOman has climbed six places to rank 49th globally in the 2026 Environmental Performance Index, up from 55th in 2024. The country now holds third place in the Middle East, second in the Arab world, and second among GCC states. This progress supports Oman Vision 2040, which aims to balance environmental, economic, and social goals through sustainable resource management and green economy initiatives. Key achievements include a top global ranking in sustainable solid waste management, clean household fuel, and sulfur dioxide emission reductions. Oman has expanded air quality monitoring with 70 stations and is developing a waste-to-energy project that processes 3,000 tonnes of municipal waste daily to generate 75-100 MW of electricity. The country also targets carbon neutrality by 2050 with a 33% emissions reduction by then, supported by biodiversity conservation and circular economy efforts.
