A pilot well in Oman's Semail Ophiolite formation has successfully produced significant flows of natural hydrogen. The project, involving HyTerra Ltd and ARA Natural Resources, suggests that peridotite rocks can generate low-carbon hydrogen through natural water-rock reactions. Geologic hydrogen could drastically lower the cost of decarbonization. US estimates suggest natural hydrogen could be produced for under $1 per kilogram, making it significantly cheaper than both fossil-fuel-based grey hydrogen and electrolysis-based green hydrogen.

Regardless of the flow rate, the policy implication is huge. If white hydrogen hits that price point, it makes current green hydrogen subsidies look overpriced. We will need new accounting standards to verify the carbon intensity of geologic sources.

Oman is leaning hard into this. Natural hydrogen is basically a free lunch for the climate if it scales. The key is whether they can find enough concentrated deposits to justify the pipelines.

Pipeline costs are the real killer here. Even if the gas is cheap at the well, moving it to industrial heat plants or refineries requires heavy capex. The economics only work if the volume is massive.
