A large-scale carbon removal and sustainable agriculture project has launched in Thamrait, Dhofar Governorate, Oman. Trufud Oman, a private-sector company, plans to plant approximately 15 million moringa trees across 1,050 hectares. The company estimates the plantation will absorb more than 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, while also producing organic moringa oil and powder for export to North America, Europe, and Asia. The project combines desert greening, solar-powered irrigation, and commercial farming. It aims to generate verified carbon credits for the voluntary carbon market, creating an additional revenue stream alongside agricultural exports. Development is expected to take about 36 months, with commercial production starting earlier. The initiative positions Oman as a growing player in climate-smart agriculture and carbon removal.

The voluntary carbon market angle is the part I find most interesting. If they can actually verify and register those removals, that is real revenue on top of the moringa oil exports. But verification in arid environments is tricky.
