Oman assesses geological hydrogen potential from ophiolite formations for clean energy transition

Oman is evaluating the potential of geological hydrogen, also known as natural hydrogen, as part of its clean energy strategy. The Ministry of Energy and Minerals highlighted the country's unique ophiolite rock formations, particularly the Samail ophiolite, which are among the largest in the world and may host naturally occurring hydrogen. However, the ministry stressed that the sector is still in the research and preliminary evaluation stage, with no commercial licenses issued yet. Any move toward development will depend on completed geological studies, data collection, and technical assessments following international scientific standards. The ministry emphasized that growing global interest in geological hydrogen should not be mistaken for immediate investment opportunities. Oman is taking a science-based approach before making decisions on this emerging low-carbon energy resource.
