Oman agriculture and livestock sectors drive net zero with smart farming, carbon sequestration, and 11 projects

Oman's agriculture and livestock sectors are expanding natural and innovative solutions to support national net zero targets. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has implemented and monitored 11 projects and initiatives through early 2026, including afforestation, blue carbon, organic fertilizer production, and sustainable animal feed. Smart agriculture technologies like AI-based fertilization, hydroponics, vertical farming, and IoT are being used to improve efficiency and reduce water, energy, and fertilizer use. Key projects include the OQ Green initiative that planted over 250,000 fruit trees, a partnership with Petroleum Development Oman to study Ghaf trees for carbon sequestration (each mature tree absorbs about 22 kg of carbon annually), and the Rima Project cultivating 150,000 jojoba trees for carbon credits and desertification control. The crop, livestock, and aquaculture sectors currently emit about 1.8 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, and these initiatives aim to cut emissions while boosting food security and economic returns.
