OMA Adds 8.7MW Solar Park and 49MWh Battery Storage at Monterrey Airport
mexicobusiness.newsGrupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA) is building an 8.7MW solar park and expanding battery storage to 49MWh at Monterrey International Airport. The project will generate 12.8GWh of clean electricity annually, cutting about 5,600 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. This is part of OMA's broader plan to source 87% of its electricity from renewables by 2030 and reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions per passenger by 66% from 2018 levels. The airport operator, controlled by VINCI Airports, has committed MX$16 billion (US$886 million) in capital spending across its 13 Mexican airports from 2026 to 2030, with half going to Monterrey. The solar and storage system supports both decarbonization goals and operational resilience, positioning Monterrey as a model for renewable energy use in the aviation sector.
