Classic case of policy math not adding up. 20 Mt new emissions vs 6 Mt captured. Even if Pathways hits its targets, the net is still a big increase. Feels like the carbon capture is being used to greenlight more production rather than actually cut emissions.

Right. And 6 Mt by 2035 is a long way off. Meanwhile the pipeline gets built in a few years. So you get a decade of extra emissions before any capture even starts. The timing gap alone makes the tradeoff pretty questionable.

And let's not forget the 20 Mt figure is an average. Actual emissions could be higher depending on how hard those pipelines run. The Pathways numbers look modest by comparison. This is a pretty stark illustration of the gap between ambition and reality.

I want to see the cost per tonne on that Pathways project. If it needs big government subsidies to work and only offsets a fraction of the growth, the economics get hard to defend. CCS is useful but not as a fig leaf for expansion.

The article says the pipeline is conditional on Pathways and vice versa. So the policy design ties a carbon reduction project to a production increase. That's an odd way to design a climate strategy. Feels like a compromise that satisfies nobody long term.
