Oil and Gas Climate Initiative Reports Lower Upstream Methane Intensity and Routine Flaring
leadership.ngUpstream oil and gas producers in the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative say they cut aggregate upstream methane intensity to 0.13 percent in 2025, staying below their 0.20 percent voluntary target for a fifth year. The group also reported upstream carbon intensity of 16.5 kg CO2e per barrel and routine flaring down 74 percent from a 2018 baseline, even as operated production rose 3 percent year on year. OGCI members, 12 companies producing about a quarter of global oil and gas, reported absolute upstream methane emissions of 0.76 million metric tonnes in 2025, down 1.2 million tonnes from 2017. The group says measurement programs using drones, continuous monitors and satellite data helped identify leaks faster. It also reported $28 billion in low-carbon investment in 2025 and cumulative spending of $156 billion since 2017. Voluntary targets remain the main mechanism, with the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter now covering 56 signatories. Whether those numbers hold up depends on independent verification and standardized reporting across a wider group of producers.
