A panel at Global Offshore Wind hosted by Bibby Marine and its E-Mission Zero partners argued that vessel electrification for offshore wind support is no longer held back by technology. Battery systems, vessel design, and offshore charging are all mature enough for deployment. The main barrier now is regulatory alignment and policy clarity, according to speakers from RenewableUK, Corvus Energy, Stillstrom, Tidal Transit, and Kongsberg Maritime. Panellists said electrified vessels can be cost-competitive and reduce exposure to fuel price volatility and future carbon costs. They called for offshore charging to be integrated into project planning earlier and for clearer commercial pathways. Bibby Marine's first eCSOV is under construction and expected to enter service in 2027. The next 12 months will test whether policy can catch up with the technology.

Agreed. But I wonder how much of that regulatory lag is about port-side grid capacity. Offshore charging needs a substation and cable connection that most ports don't have yet.

Port grid upgrades are a real issue. But the panel also mentioned access to offshore electricity directly from the wind farm. That could bypass port constraints if the regulatory pathway is clear.

Direct offshore charging from the wind farm makes sense economically. No transmission losses and the power is right there. But who pays for the charging infrastructure and how is the tariff set?

That is the million dollar question. If the developer owns the charging point they can bundle it into the PPA. If a third party owns it you need a separate revenue model. Both are doable but add complexity.

I am more interested in the total cost of ownership numbers. The article says electrified vessels can be cheaper. I would like to see the capex vs opex breakdown including battery replacement cycles.
