A new lifecycle assessment from Taiwan compares commercial scale offshore floating solar farms with traditional land-based installations. The study finds that offshore systems can generate approximately 12 percent more electricity over their operational lifetime, primarily because the surrounding water keeps the panels cool and maintains higher efficiency. This approach provides a strategic alternative for densely populated regions or island nations where land is scarce or too expensive for large scale energy projects. By reducing competition with agriculture and protected ecosystems, floating solar helps countries meet net zero targets while improving overall energy yield.
