Odisha signs MoU for Centre of Excellence on low-carbon construction materials and C&D waste management
ommcomnews.comThe Housing and Urban Development Department of Odisha has signed a tripartite MoU to establish a Centre of Excellence on Low Carbon Construction Materials and Sustainable Development. The partners are the Odisha Urban Academy, IIT Bhubaneswar, and Development Alternatives. The centre will focus on research, innovation, and capacity building for sustainable construction practices, with an initial project to create a roadmap for construction and demolition waste management in the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Khordha-Jatni-Pipili urban cluster. The centre's first major task is a scientific assessment of C&D waste generation and an integrated waste management strategy, including a Detailed Project Report. IIT Bhubaneswar will provide technical research, Development Alternatives will handle implementation, and the Odisha Urban Academy will lead policy support and training for local bodies. The scope is expected to later expand to urban air quality, solid waste, and water quality. This is a concrete step toward low-carbon urban development in Odisha, with a replicable model for other cities.
