Odisha is deploying three hydrogen fuel cell electric buses as part of a new clean mobility initiative. The project includes a dedicated green hydrogen production and refueling facility at the Pokhariput depot, aiming to produce 260 kilograms of hydrogen daily. Backed by the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the project costs 53.55 crore rupees and targets a reduction of 900 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The pilot will focus on corridors connecting Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, and Konark.

260kg of hydrogen per day is a tiny amount. I wonder about the actual capacity factor of the electrolyzers they are installing. Is the power supply from GRIDCO coming from dedicated renewables or just the general grid?

Maintenance on fuel cells in this climate will be the real test. If the upkeep costs blow out, the 900 tonne carbon saving might not justify the 53 crore spend compared to simple battery electric buses.

The funding split is the interesting part here. MNRE is covering about 36 percent of the cost. The success of this depends on how they handle the operational expenditure and risk allocation between NTPC and CRUT.
