The Odisha government is developing a green hydrogen ecosystem for public transport in Bhubaneswar. The project includes a production and refueling facility at the Pokhariput depot and the deployment of three hydrogen fuel cell electric buses. Supported by the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the initiative aims to produce 260 kg of green hydrogen daily. The pilot focuses on the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Khordha-Puri-Konark corridor to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 900 tonnes.

Three buses is a tiny sample size. The real question is the energy source for that 260kg of hydrogen. If the electricity for the electrolyzers is coming from the standard grid mix rather than dedicated renewables, the carbon savings are mostly on paper.

Beyond the energy source, I wonder about the maintenance costs for these fuel cell buses in that climate. Hydrogen infrastructure is expensive to maintain, and three buses won't provide the scale needed to bring those costs down.

The funding split is interesting. About 36 percent is coming from the central government via the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The rest depends on state support and stakeholder contributions, which usually means the operational viability is still a big question mark.
