Kenya is piloting a direct air capture system in Elementaita that removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it underground. The project uses geothermal steam to power the capture process and injects the resulting liquid CO2 into basaltic rock formations for permanent mineralization. This initiative involves a partnership between Octavia Carbon and Cella Minerals, utilizing the Rift Valley's unique geology to create permanent carbon removals. The project aims to generate carbon credits and explore future uses for captured carbon, such as sustainable aviation fuels.
