Ocean to Sea Funds $225K Study on Wastewater-Based Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement for Global Carbon Removal
carbonherald.comOcean to Sea has awarded $225,000 to a research team to study how wastewater treatment plants can be used for ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), a method that boosts the ocean's natural ability to absorb and store CO2. The project, backed by DC Water, HRSD, the Ocean Sewage Alliance, and the Water Research Foundation, will assess the feasibility of turning wastewater infrastructure into a platform for durable carbon removal while reducing treatment costs and ocean acidification. Wastewater facilities account for 3-7% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The research aims to produce a technical report evaluating geographic, operational, and policy factors for OAE integration. The wastewater alkalinity enhancement (WAE) method, already deployed by CREW Carbon at over 10 utilities, improves nutrient removal and cuts emissions. This study could unlock new carbon removal pathways and climate finance opportunities for public utilities.
