Ocean iron fertilization trade-offs: CDR efficiency vs ecological risk in Southern Ocean and equatorial Pacific
bioengineer.orgA new Nature study models 60 years of ocean iron fertilization (OIF) across ten biomes and finds that carbon removal efficiency varies sharply by region. The Southern Ocean offers higher CDR with lower ecological risk, while equatorial Pacific fertilization expands oxygen-minimum zones and reduces macrozooplankton biomass. The study estimates net CDR of 1.1 to 5.3 ppm over 60 years, but more than half is re-emitted within decades after fertilization stops. The research highlights a key problem for carbon markets: the disconnect between local fertilization and global carbon outcomes makes robust crediting difficult. Southern Ocean deployment appears safest, but equatorial and subtropical options carry higher ecosystem costs or lower efficiency. Governance and equity questions remain unresolved.
