Ocean Carbon Sink Nears Its Limit: What Acidification Means for Climate and Coastal Communities

New research confirms the ocean has crossed a key planetary boundary for acidification, with surface pH dropping 0.1 units since the Industrial Revolution. That is a 30 percent increase in acidity, and it is happening faster than anything in the geological record. The result is less carbonate available for shell-building organisms like corals, pteropods, and shellfish, which form the base of marine food webs. For India, the impact is direct. Coral cover in the Gulf of Mannar dropped from 37 percent to 27 percent between 2005 and 2021. Lakshadweep lost half its coral cover between 1998 and 2022. A 2025 study found that 67 percent of India's fishing households live at or below the poverty line, making them especially vulnerable to declining fish stocks. As the ocean becomes more acidic, its ability to absorb future carbon also drops, creating a feedback loop that makes atmospheric CO2 reduction even harder. This is not a distant problem. It is a measurable shift in the planet's largest carbon sink, and it is happening now.
