Oaks Amusement Park in Portland is replacing its propane-powered train with an all-electric, battery-powered locomotive. The switch is funded by a $430,263 grant from Portland General Electric's Drive Change Fund, supported by the Oregon Clean Fuels Program. Park officials say the new train will cut greenhouse gas emissions from the ride by 99% and eliminate about 6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. The electric C.P. Huntington locomotive is built by Chance Rides and will pull the park's existing passenger cars, including an ADA-accessible car. The project also adds a covered station with automatic charging, multilingual displays, and an E-Mobility Fair. The new train is expected to debut when Oaks Park opens for the 2027 season in March. Rides remain free, and the route will stay similar after a slight reroute for a new drop tower.
