Oak Ridge National Laboratory finished a 2.5-year project to replace above-ground piping at its Process Waste Facility, part of the Liquid and Gaseous Waste Operations system. Crews swapped out 2,500 feet of carbon steel for stainless steel and upgraded more than 300 valves, flanges and supports. The goal is to cut maintenance needs and lower the risk of outages that could pause lab operations. OREM and cleanup contractor UCOR managed the work. The waste system covers more than 60 facilities and 27 miles of piping, treating about 110 million gallons of waste per year. Workers also installed heat trace systems to keep pipes from freezing. The next phase targets the Melton Valley Process Waste Collection Tank Facility.
