In hospitals, medical radioisotopes power radiotherapy for cervical cancer patients and cardiac imaging, while isotope hydrology helps northern communities drill wells with precision. These non-power applications demonstrate how nuclear science supports food security, public health, and sustainable water management today. Ghana's updated climate framework positions nuclear energy as a central pillar for low-carbon development, with plans to deploy either large reactors or Small Modular Reactors by the mid-2030s. Site identification at Nsuban in the Western Region is underway alongside legal framework development. Globally, about 440 reactors provide 9% of electricity and prevent billions of tons of CO2 emissions annually. For Ghana, integrating nuclear into the grid would complement existing renewables and displace fossil fuel generation, though timelines and financing remain open questions.
