Nuclear plant restarts for data centers: Palisades, Three Mile Island, Duane Arnold explained
pennlive.comThree shuttered U.S. nuclear plants are being brought back online with help from federal loans and data center power purchase agreements. The Department of Energy is lending up to $4.4 billion to restart Palisades in Michigan, Crane Clean Energy Center at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania, and Duane Arnold in Iowa, adding about 2.25 gigawatts of carbon-free capacity. Microsoft has a 20-year deal with Constellation for TMI Unit 1, and Google is working with NextEra on Duane Arnold. Supporters say restarting existing reactors is faster and cheaper than building new ones, and it gives data centers a steady carbon-free power source. Critics point to safety risks from aging plants designed for a different climate era, and question whether taxpayer loans are needed when big tech is willing to pay a premium. The first restart, Palisades, would be the first U.S. reactor to return after starting decommissioning.
