Nuada, a UK carbon capture company, has partnered with French energy infrastructure group IDEX to build one of Europe's first industrial-scale biogenic CO2 capture facilities. The facility will be installed at IDEX's Kogeban biomass cogeneration plant in Hauts-de-France and is expected to capture up to 10,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 each year. The captured CO2 will be purified and liquefied for use in the food and beverage sector, replacing fossil-derived CO2, while a portion will be permanently stored underground to generate carbon removals. This project is part of a broader push to diversify Europe's CO2 supply away from ammonia production, which currently accounts for 40 to 45% of the continent's supply and is vulnerable to energy market disruptions. Nuada's Adspire technology uses metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to selectively separate CO2 from flue gases, powered entirely by electricity and eliminating chemical solvents. This is Nuada's first industrial-scale deployment after pilot demonstrations, and the company says the technology is designed for replication at other industrial sites across France and Europe without disrupting existing heat or power generation. The project follows other recent biogenic CO2 developments in Europe, including BioCirc's BECCS facility in Denmark, signaling growing momentum in the region's renewable CO2 supply chains.
