The Australian government has approved a NSW proposal to generate carbon credits from native forests, allowing credits to be sold to polluters as offsets. The Greens argue this turns forests into cash cows for climate polluters and delays the urgent need to end native forest logging entirely. Greens MP Sue Higginson stated that forests have intrinsic value beyond carbon accounting and that the new method could worsen climate change by allowing continued emissions. While the method has improved from earlier drafts, the Greens call for ending logging regardless of the offset scheme.
