NSW falling short on 2030 emissions targets: Net Zero Commission report warns on coal, renewables, and EV rollout
seymourtelegraph.com.auA new report from the Net Zero Commission shows NSW is not on track to meet its legislated emissions reduction targets of 50% by 2030 and 70% by 2035. The state needs to cut emissions 2.5 times faster than its average rate since 2005 to hit the 2030 goal. The Commission says government decisions on coal mine extensions are inconsistent with the targets, and the rollout of renewable generation, storage, and transmission is behind schedule. The electricity sector must deliver a large share of the reductions. Faster EV charging infrastructure and targeted methane cuts from livestock, waste, and coal mining are also recommended. Chair Nick Rowley said planning system delays are slowing progress, even though funding and investment are available. NSW accounts for about a quarter of Australia's total emissions, while South Australia has already cut emissions by 55% from 2005 levels.
