NSW emissions reduction targets at risk as state falls behind on climate goals
canberratimes.com.auA new report from the Net Zero Commission shows NSW is not cutting emissions fast enough to meet its 2030 and 2035 targets. The state needs to reduce emissions 2.5 times faster than its average rate since 2005 to hit the 50% reduction goal by 2030. The commission points to slow renewable energy and transmission rollout, inconsistent government decisions on coal mine extensions, and a need for faster EV charging infrastructure as key gaps. Electricity generation is where most of the required cuts must come from, but planning delays are holding back projects. Methane from livestock, waste, and coal mining makes up about 30% of NSW emissions and needs targeted reduction. The chair of the commission warned that missing legislated targets could damage public trust. NSW accounts for roughly a quarter of Australia's total emissions, making its performance critical to national climate goals.
