Biochar is a solid way to handle biomass, but I want to see the actual tonnage of carbon they expect to sequester. Clearing invasive species is a good start, but the scale of the operation determines if this actually moves the needle for the Reef.
The real question is which carbon standard they are using for the credits. If they cannot prove long-term permanence and additionality, these credits will trade at a massive discount compared to high-quality removals.
Pyrolysis requires significant energy. I am curious if they are using renewable heat or if the energy cost of processing the biomass eats into the net carbon benefit. Any word on the energy source for the plants?
Converting invasive biomass into a soil amendment is a practical move. The logistics of moving heavy biomass from the field to the pyrolysis unit is usually where these projects get expensive. Hope they have a plan for the transport costs.
