Nottingham net zero plan: council eyes energy partnership, £8 billion cost for 2050 target

Nottingham City Council is exploring a strategic energy partnership with a private firm to help reach net zero by 2050. The total cost of decarbonizing the city is estimated between £4 billion and £8 billion, with the partnership expected to deliver roughly £1.5 to £2 billion of that investment. The council has already cut emissions 80% from 2007 levels and aims for carbon neutrality by 2028. Planned projects include solar farms on the city outskirts, expanded heat networks, and housing retrofits that have already cut tenant bills by 50%. No wind power sites have been identified yet. The council says borrowing may be needed in later years but is not planned initially. Similar partnerships have been launched in Bristol and Coventry.
