Nottingham net zero plan could cost up to £8 billion, council documents show

Nottingham City Council documents reveal the city's path to net zero emissions by 2050 could cost between £4 billion and £8 billion. The council plans to partner with a large energy company under a Strategic Energy Partnership (SEP) to deliver roughly 20% of that cost, or about £1.5 billion to £2 billion. Projects include solar farms, new heat networks, and housing retrofits that have already cut tenant energy bills by 50%. The council has already reduced its emissions by 80% compared to 2007 levels. Borrowing may be needed later in the 15- to 20-year partnership. Officials say the work will lower household bills, improve air quality, and reduce reliance on international energy markets. No wind power sites are being considered yet, but one solar farm location on the city edge has been identified.
