Northop Hall becomes hub for Hynet carbon capture pipeline construction

The Hynet carbon capture project is moving forward with a new construction hub in Northop Hall, Flintshire. Workers will build an Above Ground Installation that connects the main onshore pipeline to a spur line from the Heidelberg Materials cement works in Padeswood. That cement plant aims to capture up to 800,000 tonnes of CO2 per year using Mitsubishi Heavy Industries technology. Preparatory work at the Northop Hall site runs from summer 2026 to spring 2027. Activities include ground levelling, foundation excavation, and pipework installation starting January 2027. The project will use temporary traffic lights on the B5125 during setup and post health and safety signage. Most construction happens during standard daytime hours. The pipeline runs 26 km from Elton, Cheshire to the Point of Ayr gas terminal in Talacre. Captured CO2 from industry in Cheshire West and Flintshire will be sent offshore for storage in depleted gas reservoirs under the Irish Sea. This is one of the UK's first full-scale carbon capture and storage networks.
