Bernhard Schulte has christened the Northern Purpose, a 7,500-cubic-meter liquefied carbon dioxide carrier built in China. The vessel is the fourth dedicated ship for the Northern Lights project, which creates a cross-border infrastructure to transport captured CO2 from Northwest European industrial sites to permanent storage in Norway. To reduce its own emissions, the ship uses an LNG dual-fuel propulsion system, rotor sails for wind assistance, and an air lubrication system. This expansion of the LCO2 fleet is a key step in scaling the transport capacity required for European industrial decarbonization.
