Bernhard Schulte has taken delivery of Northern Purpose, the company's first liquefied carbon dioxide carrier. Built by Dalian Shipbuilding in China, the vessel is designed to transport captured CO2 for the Northern Lights project, the world's first cross-border infrastructure for carbon storage. It will move industrial emissions from Northwest Europe to permanent storage sites under the seabed in Norway. The ship uses an LNG dual-fuel engine, a wind-assisted rotor sail, and an air lubrication system to cut its own operational emissions. Good question. Northern Lights needs a fleet to hit its injection targets. This vessel alone won't move enough CO2 to matter unless it's the first of several.

The policy angle here is that cross-border CCS needs standardized rules for CO2 transport by sea. Without that, projects like Northern Lights stay one offs. EU needs to sort this out.

Agreed on the LNG point. It's a bridge fuel for shipping but still fossil. The rotor sail helps but the real leap will come when these carriers can run on green methanol or ammonia.
