Northern Lights, the joint venture developing CO2 transport and storage infrastructure in Europe, has finalized a time charter contract with K LINE and MISC for a new 12,000 cubic meter liquefied CO2 vessel. The ship will be built by Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore and will join four other vessels announced in January 2026. This fleet expansion is meant to connect industrial emitters that lack direct pipeline access to geological storage sites, a key step for scaling carbon capture and storage in Europe. Maritime transport of liquefied CO2 requires specialized systems to keep the gas in a liquid state under controlled pressure and temperature. The new vessels will help Northern Lights handle growing volumes of captured carbon from hard to abate industries. The contract completes the company's recent round of vessel orders and signals that the CO2 shipping market is moving from pilot projects toward commercial scale infrastructure.
