Bernhard Schulte has launched the Northern Purpose, a dedicated liquefied CO2 carrier designed to transport captured emissions from industrial sites in Northwest Europe to permanent storage in Norway. This vessel is the fourth addition to the Northern Lights CCS fleet. The ship features a 7,500 cubic meter capacity and utilizes LNG dual-fuel propulsion, wind-assisted rotor sails, and air lubrication to lower its own operational footprint while scaling the infrastructure needed for cross-border carbon sequestration.

The ship specs look fine, but 7,500 cubic meters is relatively small for a dedicated carrier. I wonder what the total annual throughput capacity of the fleet is compared to the projected capture rates of the industrial customers they are targeting.

Transport is only half the battle. The cost of capturing the CO2 at the plant and liquefying it for these ships is where the money usually disappears. I would like to see the energy penalty for the liquefaction process at the loading terminals.

The cross-border aspect is the key here. This relies heavily on the London Protocol amendments allowing CO2 to move across national boundaries for storage. If the regulatory framework for these shipments slips, the ships just sit idle.
