Northern Ireland farmers: final registration for Soil Nutrient Health Scheme before payment penalties apply
loveballymena.onlineDAERA has opened a final registration window for the Soil Nutrient Health Scheme (SNHS), closing midnight on 7 September 2026. Eligible farm businesses that have not yet registered must do so to avoid a 10% reduction in their 2027 Farm Sustainability Payment, rising to 15% from 2028. Over 92.5% of eligible farms have already signed up. The scheme provides soil sampling and analysis of nutrient status and carbon levels, helping farmers reduce fertiliser use and improve land management. Registration is via DAERA Online Services, and CAFRE training is required. No further registration windows will be offered after this date. The scheme covers four geographical phases rolled out since 2022. This mop-up phase is for farms operating on or before 8 September 2025 that missed earlier deadlines. AFBI will send invitation letters with registration instructions. Minister Andrew Muir urged remaining farmers to act, noting the scheme's value for effective land management and its link to the Farm Sustainability Payment. Farmers needing help can contact the AFBI Soil Nutrient Health Scheme Administration Team. This is a concrete policy mechanism linking agricultural practice to carbon data and direct financial incentives.
