Northern Ireland carbon footprint grows to 12 tonnes per person as court clears A5 road upgrade
irishnews.comNorthern Ireland's carbon footprint rose for a third straight year in 2023, reaching 23 million tonnes of greenhouse gases. That works out to 12 tonnes per person, nearly a fifth above the UK average of 10.2 tonnes. Private car emissions grew to 2.7 million tonnes, while emissions from heating homes fell to their lowest level since 2001. The figures landed just after the Court of Appeal cleared the 1.7 billion pound A5 road upgrade, accepting it will increase emissions but ruling the Climate Change Act does not ban roads that have been assessed. More than half of Northern Ireland's footprint now comes from imported goods, which are not covered by Stormont's climate targets. Those import-related emissions are the main reason the total keeps rising.
