Northern Gas Networks Proposes Hydrogen Pipelines for Humber and Teesside Industrial Decarbonization

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) has unveiled plans for two underground hydrogen pipelines in the Humber and Teesside regions of the UK. The 39-mile Teesside pipeline and 68-mile Humber route aim to connect hydrogen production to heavy industries like steel, chemicals, bricks, and glass, which currently rely on natural gas for high-heat processes. Hydrogen offers a low-carbon alternative for these hard-to-electrify sectors, supporting job retention and regional economic growth. The projects are classified as Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, with construction potentially starting in the 2030s pending planning approval. NGN estimates the combined scheme could deliver around 1.2 billion pounds in economic value and support up to 1,200 jobs. The pipelines will use a mix of repurposed and new-build pipes to transport low-carbon hydrogen to industrial users and power generators. Public feedback is being sought in the coming months to shape the design and environmental assessments. This initiative is a concrete step toward decarbonizing UK industrial clusters, though timelines and final costs remain uncertain until the Development Consent Order process concludes.
