North Sea CO2 storage project passes key test well milestone for Teesside and Humber CCS

The Northern Endurance Partnership has successfully drilled its first exploration well for carbon storage in the Southern North Sea. The well, known as BC39, found a 250-metre-thick porous sandstone layer capped by 500 metres of impermeable rock, which the partners say is well suited for permanent CO2 storage. The project is part of the East Coast Cluster, aiming to store captured emissions from industrial sites in Teesside and the Humber. The partnership, backed by bp, Equinor, and TotalEnergies, reached financial close on its Teesside transport and storage system in December 2024. Construction is underway, with operations expected to start in 2029. The next phase extends the network through the Humber Carbon Capture Pipeline. These results support regulatory commitments and help build evidence for scalable carbon storage solutions in the UK.
