Noble Carbon Smart Breakers Could Cut EV Charger Installation Costs by Avoiding Panel Upgrades
mezha.netNoble Carbon, a Massachusetts startup, has developed smart circuit breakers that let homeowners install EV chargers, heat pumps, or induction cooktops without replacing their existing electrical panel. The devices monitor real-time power usage and temporarily reduce power to high-demand appliances during peak loads, preventing the panel from exceeding capacity. This approach could significantly lower installation costs, which often double when a panel upgrade is required. The company says the breakers install in under five minutes using unused slots in the panel, and it has been testing them in employees' homes for over a year. Noble Carbon is also working with Eversource to deploy the breakers in up to 200 apartments in multifamily buildings across Massachusetts. The startup will present its technology at TechCrunch Disrupt in October, having been selected for the Startup Battlefield competition. If the product achieves UL certification and scales, it could ease one of the biggest cost barriers to home electrification. By reducing the need for expensive electrical panel replacements, smart breakers like these could accelerate EV adoption and the switch to electric heat, contributing to broader grid decarbonization.
