NNPC and TotalEnergies extend methane detection partnership for two more years

NNPC and TotalEnergies have renewed their agreement to use AUSEA drone technology for detecting and measuring methane emissions across NNPC's upstream operations. The two-year extension builds on a 2023 deal and supports NNPC's goal of near-zero methane emissions by 2030 under the OGDC and OGMP 2.0 frameworks. The AUSEA system, developed with CNRS and the University of Reims, helps identify unaccounted emission sources and assess flare efficiency. TotalEnergies says it was the first oil producer in Nigeria to eliminate routine gas flaring, partly through this technology. NNPC wants to scale the program to more assets and explore local tech transfer.

Good to see them extending this. The AUSEA drone tech is actually useful for finding leaks that satellites miss. But I want to see the actual methane reduction numbers from phase one before calling it a win.

Agreed. NNPC says they want to scale it and maybe transfer the tech locally. That would be a real step forward if it happens. Otherwise it's just another MOU with nice press.

The OGMP 2.0 reporting angle is key. Methane detection is useless if the data doesn't feed into transparent, audited reports. NNPC has a poor track record on disclosure. Let's see if this changes that.

TotalEnergies claiming first to eliminate routine flaring in Nigeria is a big claim. Would like to see independent verification of that. Flare efficiency measurement is one thing, actual elimination is another.

Two years is a short extension. If the tech works, why not a longer commitment? Feels like they are keeping options open rather than fully committing to methane abatement at scale.
