NLC India plans pumped storage in Tamil Nadu and Odisha, targets 10 GW renewables by 2030

NLC India, through its clean energy arm NLCIL Renewables Ltd, is moving into large-scale pumped storage projects in Tamil Nadu and Odisha. The goal is to add grid-scale storage that can balance solar and wind intermittency as the company grows its renewable portfolio from 1.8 GW to over 10 GW by 2030, with a longer term target of 32.7 GW by 2047. The state-run coal PSU is also piloting a 4 MW solar-powered PEM electrolyser for green hydrogen at Neyveli and working with IIT Madras on carbon capture systems. It has picked up exploration licenses for critical minerals in Chhattisgarh and Telangana. These moves point to a broader shift from coal generation toward storage, hydrogen, and low-carbon industrial inputs, though pumped storage project details and timelines are still thin.
