NLC India Plans Pumped Storage and 10 GW Renewables by 2030

NLC India, a state-run coal miner, is diversifying into clean energy with a plan to build pumped storage projects in Tamil Nadu and Odisha. The company targets growing its operational renewable capacity from 1.8 GW to over 10 GW by 2030, with a longer-term goal of 32.7 GW by 2047. It also aims for a 50% clean energy mix in its generation portfolio ahead of schedule. Beyond solar and wind, NLC India is setting up a 4 MW solar-powered green hydrogen plant at Neyveli and partnering with IIT Madras on carbon capture systems. The company has secured exploration licenses for critical minerals like phosphorite, limestone, vanadium, and titanium in Indian states, and is pursuing international prospects through KABIL. These steps reflect a broader push to reduce reliance on coal while addressing grid intermittency and supply chain risks.
